Oak Beams are a combustible material and are not fire treated. For this reason it is important that beams are installed at a safe distance away from the stove and flue pipe as per HETAS and building regulations.

  • We advise letting your beam to acclimatise to room temperature for around 2 weeks prior to installation. It should be taken out of the packaging while doing this to let it breathe.
  • You will not need to apply any additional finish to your beam straight away. Your beam may dull down slightly with age. To keep your beam looking new you can apply a small amount of wax polish or danish oil. Do not use cleaning products on the beams. Use a dry duster.
  • Your beam may already have surface cracks which are to be expected as oak is a natural product. Once installed in a central heated house further cracks may develop which is considered completely normal and part of the charm. We recommend storing your beam for 2 weeks in your house prior to installation. Please also remove the beam from the box while it is acclimatising to the room. If installing above a wood burning stove we recommend gradually increasing the temperature slowly over a period of 2 weeks or so.
  • Unless otherwise stated we drill the holes to accept the concealed brackets/fixings in the largest face. For example a 5.5”x3.5” beam will have the holes machined in a 5.5” side. We can of course machine the holes in the smaller side. Just add a note in the checkout confirming your requirements. Please note, by doing this the beam will be none returnable. Beams with corbels are often the opposite way around.
  • It is possible to fit your beam to a plasterboard wall if you can locate the timber uprights however it is best to fit your beam to a brick or breeze block wall. If this isn’t possible, we would recommend a fascia beam no larger than 5.5″x2.5″. Plasterboard screws can be used in conjunction with keyhole brackets machined into the back of the beam. We can leave the beams without any pre-drilled holes so that you can add these on site in your preferred location.
  • We now have a range of shelves available that come complete with fixing suitable for plasterboard walls up to 15mm thick.
  • As oak is a natural product is is impossible for colours to be a complete match each time. Oak also varies in regards to knots grains and cracks. Each piece is unique to you and your home.
  • Although you could specify for us to select a beam with no cracks, we can not guarantee this. It depends on the stock we have available. If we do find a beam with no cracks, we can not guarantee that it will not crack once installed. It is typical for air-dried beams to crack and move slightly overtime. If you are looking for a beam that does not crack at all then take a look at our kiln dried oak beam
  • Our beams and shelves are not waterproof but they are water repellent. Coasters should be used when placing cups or vases on our products to avoid marks and stains. Any spillage should be wiped away immediately. Mantels and shelves should be wiped down with a dry duster only as cleaning products can harm the finish.
